WAHABISM

What is it? The most extreme form of 18th century Islamic fundamentalism. It has been the official theology of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states from their formation in the 20th century. Named after its founder Ibn Abdul Wahab it features stripped-down Islam, simple, short prayers, and undecorated mosques. Wahabis were violent from the beginning and many Arab societies tried hard to stamp out the order. But the Wahabis were encouraged and used by Europeans fighting against the Turks or the American oil interests opposed to the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. Wahabi influence is strong in mosques in Europe and the US.
